This song is basically from one of the band members' experience of confronting a friend on the brink of suicide and death.

I think that "Jumper" is about a guy who's telling some one not to commit suicide ("I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend"), and that if the suicidal person would just talk about it, it could get better. Perhaps the non-suicidal person has also had a bout with depression, so he knows what's going on ("I would understand"). Basically, it's every teenager's lament, no one understands what we go through, and we just can't stop thinking of our mistakes ("Maybe today, you could put the past away").

This whole song is incredible when you really take the time to think about it. Thats what third eye blinds music is all about-the deeper side, they like to make you think. There is also double meanings to lots of their songs when you think about it. For me, I can say Jumper saved my life. I dont tell that to many people because I dont think they will understand how music can save you.

In one way-this song is dark, but in another, it can inspire a person to get help. The demons he talks about can be anything that bothers you, bullies, significant others, what ever they may be.

"I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend" He's there to coax you away from death, he may not understand entirely, but he will at least be there for you. If you can bury your past, you can move to your future with more ease.

"i wish you can step back from that ledge my friend" i think this means a guy who is troubled very deeply and is about to committ suicide....his friend is begging him not to thought...his friend then says..."..you can cut ties with all the lies that you'd be living in and if you do not want to see me again i would understand.....you can out the past away..". His friend tells him the past can be put behind you and you can move on in life.

"I wish you would step back from that ledge, my friend..." I know a lot of people who haven't dealt with suicide or anything oblivious to it. But, I have had friends, and I know that a lot of people can be on the verge of it. This song, is like, telling you that you should just not worry, but for anyone who's ever tried to talk someone out of suicide, it's not easy. And he repeats it.."I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend..." Over and over, and it makes sense. It's also, like, in a way, telling yourself to watch it, don't freak so much. Don't worry...cuz there are things to live for. And it's an awesome song. Most people don't even think of the lyrics just sing their hearts out, that's still what I do, but I know what I'm saying when I sing, and I think why I like this song. :)

Jumper

I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies,
That you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again,
I would understand.
I would understand,
The angry boy,
A bit too insane,
Icing over a secret pain,
You know you don't belong,
You're the first to fight,
You're way too loud,
You're The flash of light,
On a burial shroud,
I know something's wrong,
Well everyone I know has got a reason,
To say,
Put the past away,
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies,
That you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again,
I would understand,
I would understand.
Well he's on the table,
And he's gone to code,
And I do not think anyone knows,
What they are doing here,
And your friends have left,
You've been dismissed,
I never thought it would come to this,
And I want you to know,
Everyone's got to face down the demons,
Maybe today,
We can put the past away,
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
You could cut ties with all the lies,
That you've been living in,
And if you do not want to see me again,
I would understand,
I would understand,
I would understand...
Can you put the past away,
I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend,
I would understand...

Band Comments:

"Jumper" comes from a story out manager told us about a high school friend of his who was gay," says lead singer Stephan Jenkins, 34, of the band's fifth single of the debut disc, Semi Charmed Life. "He went to a conservative school in San Diego [with] all sons of military types. Being gay was just not acceptable. He offed himself- he jumped of a bridge." But "Jumper" is also about Stephan's own difficult, often alienating childhood experiences. "My parents divorced, and that hurt me. We were poor and I went to a rich high school. I was dyslexic and had Attention Deficit Disorder, which I still have. So I carried all these things with me. One afternoon I had this epiphany. I said 'You know what? I don't have it all together. I come from stuff that was really difficult, and that's me. That's who I am.' I embraced that. There's a line in the song that says, 'Everyone's got to face down the demons/Maybe today we can out the past away.' It's very much a song about putting the past away."
