DUH!!!! HASN'T ANYONE HEARD OF DARWIN???? It's about the theory of evolution and all of that... I mean come on here, "Chromosome divides, multiply and thrive" totally describes it! And "A spaceman fucked an ape" means that humans probably evolved from monkeys ya know? And "boom tick tick and who skipped the long play" the long play is where it takes millions of years for creatures to evolve and "who skipped the record and who amped what you say" means how people overlook this theory and lean toward religions and how the Bible says the world was made in seven days.
Name: Jake Johns
The opening of th song is blatant referance to the darwin-istic theory of evolution (hence the title of the song.) The coneptual basis of the evolution of man from the ape is mocked and questioned through out the song in an overtone which seems to invalidate the a-morality associated with the theiry it self.
"And the strong survive
And the strong survive
And the grandson of an alien wears his snake skin boots
And shows his reptile roots"
Seems to demonstrate the imperfection of the "survival of the fitest theory"
as applid to modern day life.
in short the song is saying that if god is non-existant and the theory of evolution is correct,... the lack of morality associated wih it is not only disturbing but evil (wrong)
("show me something good")
I don't believe t the song is an illusion to any religious affiliation of the band or it's members it simply is criticizing the dominant species mind set.

I think Darwin is about the lack of God or faith in society.
"We're lacking something good - is this all for nothing"
I think this line is pretty much referring to the lack of religion. The lack of something higher than what it seems to be in life - to get a career and make money. Stephans asking if anyone could even question whether or not God exists, because how else is this all of this here?
"When a plane takes off you know it..."
I remember Stephan referring replying that "he prays everytime a plane takes off" answering a question about that line. That line just sums up the song with Stephans belief and faith in God.
This song is basically a comparison between two beliefs - the "scientific" belief, of course with the master, Charles Darwin, whom believes every living thing is evolving, with the cliche'd "survival of the fittest" phrase. Stephan is using this concept as contrast to the belief in God. - "We're lacking something good"
This song is obviously about evolution... but even more so, it's saying that the human race isn't what it could have been. Or can be. We've been on the planet for a long time and we've become the dominant species, we've got a government and law and school and education. But is this what really counts? "We’re lacking something, something good" Is this the right path for our race to be taking? We think we're happy. but is there a possibility that there was another path we could have taken, a completely different way of life that we could have had that we missed? I think that's what this song is about.

TO ME, THIS SONG CAN BE ABOUT THE PYSCHO-SOCIAL DEBT WE ARE IN TO OUR CHROMOSOMES. LIVES ARE FOCUSED ON FINDING A MATE THAT WILL SUCCESSFULLY PROPOGATE YOUR GENES/CHROMOSOMES TO THE FUTURE. EVERYTHING YOU REALLY EVER WANT USUALLY IS ABOUT MOVING UP (BETTER JOB/CAR/GUITAR...HOTTER GIRL/GUY...ETC)A LEVEL(BETTER JOB/CAR/GUITAR...HOTTER GIRL/GUY...ETC) OR ACQUIRING SOMETHING EXQUISITE. IT TAKES THE TEXTURE OUT OF LIFE BY SUGGESTING LOVE IS NOT A DRIVING FORCE, BUT A TOOL TO NATURE AND SCIENCE.
***MORE IMPORTANTLY, ITS SORT OF A PERVASIVE MOCKERY/QUESTIONING OF DARWINIAN IDEALS AND THE RESULT OF ABIDING BY THOSE BELIEFS. "WE'RE LACKING SOMETHING, SOMETHING GOOD...IS THIS SONG FOR NOTHING....SOMETHING GOOD?" REALLY DRIVES HOME THE DIFFUCULTY EXCEPTING THIS BELIEF. IS IT ALL ABOUT SELF-PROPAGATION, ARE EMOTIONS AND LOVE JUST TOOLS, IS THERE SOULAND SPIRIT, WILL WE JUST DIE A PAWN OF GENETICS?***
"I WANNA BE THE DJ" IS THE PUNCH STEPHAN THROWS AT THE IDEAL, INSINUATING HE'D LIKE TO BE THE ONE WHO SHUFFLES US UP TO COMPLETE THE PRODUCT OF SELF AND INDIVIDUAL...WHICH IS ULTIMATELY WHAT "ITS" ABOUT.
READ "THE MORAL ANIMAL" BY ROBERT WRIGHT....STEPHAN WROTE THIS SONG AFTER READING THIS BOOK...IT COULS CHANGE YOUR LIFE AND/OR CHALLENGE YOUR IDEALS.
ALL IN ALL,"IT'S A LONG NIGHT" ENJOY JUST BEING HERE.
PS-IF ANYONE HAS ANY INSIGHT ON THESE BELIEFS...DROP A LINE.
Jenkins clearly wants to be his own person and make his own rules. When he says " And a spaceman fucked an ape he's probably hinting that another being from another planet or universe had sex with an ape, got it pregnant, and left. That explains "Then cut out on the date." That's how he probably believes that man came to be. When he says " who skipped the record and who amped what you say" he's probably referring to people who say that we came from this and that's final. When Jenkins says " we are lacking something" it's like we can't even think for ourselves."Something good" and that's our own ideas, views, and beliefs.
alright this song is simple...this song is about a band that third eye blind played with in 1998 in a little town called Muncie, Indiana. The name of the band that opened up for them was Shinky. It was a three piece band all comprised of 16 year olds. After the show Jenkins commented on them by saying "Those kids were bad ass tonight..they just play some balls out rock n roll and it was a privaledge playing with them...maybe i'll right a song about em or shit even better, take em on tour with us." That about sums it up....so if you ever hear of an awsome band called Shinky playing near your city..you better check em out casue Stephan said their bad-ass.
It seems to me that this was one of those songs written to take up space on the album.... not that it's not a good song or that it's lacking talent, it's one of my favorite songs on the album, and i think it's damn funny, stephan was brobably high when he wrote this, it's very light hearted, yet deep at the same time.... it describes evolution from the time of darwin to today "And the spaceman fucked an ape" it shows time passing by.
