Well i once heard kevin say that it was about someone who has been sexually abused or raped. So i guess that's what it has to be.
I heard at their Knoxville, TN concert August 13, 2000 that this song was
about a guys response to his friend (a girl) that was date raped..."The guy
who put his hands on you, has got nothing to do with me." It just basically
says that he wants her to be the normal girl that he used to know and hang
out with but he wants to be there for her. He doesn't want her to stay away
from him because of this bastard. He also wants her to stand up for herself
when people put her down. "come back down to the Dalva Bar and tell them
'that's just my battle scar"
This song means a lot to me. It's definetly my favorite. This song is
about being abused sexually or raped. It's just like, you have to try to
get over it. "It's like walking with the wounded, carrying that weight way
too far." Don't blame all the people around you. It's not their fault and
if they could, they would probably help you. "The guy who put his hands on
you has got nothing to do with me."
"Let me break it down till I force the issue/We miss your face and you know
we wish you/Would come back down to the Dalva bar/You tell them that's just
my battle scar" Then he talks about how it used to be before and he wants
it to go back.
"you're an angel in the pit with her hands in the air" It's kind of like he
knows she's in this place and she doesn't know what to do. And they just
want her back. Whatever happened to her changed her a lot and they miss her
and he wants her to get over it. "Back down the bully to the back of the
bus cause it's time for them to be scared of us."
Name: natasha heaton
i think it is about a girl who has been geting abused by their boy friend
and is scared to even talk to any of her old friends cause he might kick her
butt she just is not the same way she used to be!!!!
I think it also is bout girl getting raped and throught the song her life
starts to get back to "normal" because some guy is by her side throught the
song even when she dosen't want to be there like "we're missing you" and "I
hope you come around". Also at the end of the song she gets back her
strength to move on like "back down the bully to the back of the bus cuz
it's time for them to be scared of us" and "till your yelling, how
we'erliving cuz u got the ball and u rock on baby rock on".
To begin, I'd like to say that I think "Wounded" is one of the best songs on
"THE GUY WHO PUTS HIS HANDS ON YOU HAS GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH ME / AND THE
BRUSES THAT YOU FEEL WILL HEAL AND I HOPE YOU COME AROUND CAUSE WE'RE
MISSING YOU / AND YOU USED TO SPEAK SO EASY / NOW YOU'RE AFRAID TO TALK TO
ME / IT'S LIKE WALKING WITH THE WOUNDED..."
This definatly tells me that a girl has been hurt in some way by another guy
and is now scared to go around this other guy (maybe Stephan Jenkins) for
fear that he will hurt her the same way. All of the "guys" are missing her
and when she does come back she's not the same.
"CARRYING THAT WEIGHT WAY TOO FAR / THE CONCRETE PULLED YOU DOWN SO HARD /
OUT THERE WITH THE WOUNDED / WE'RE MISSING YOU / WELL I NEVER CLAIMED TO
UNDERSTAND WHAT HAPPENS AFTER DARK / BUT MY FINGERS CATCH THE SPARKS AT THE
THOUGHT OF TOUCHING YOU / WHEN YOU'RE WOUNDED..."
This part might suggest that the girl got pulled into the hard street crowd
and the guy doesn't understand what happens out there. But maybe inside he
has a longing for this girl.
"LEMME BREAK IT DOWN TILL WE FORCE THE ISSUE / WE MISS YOUR FACE AND YOU
KNOW WE WISH YOU / WOULD COME BACK DOWN TO THE DALVA BAR / YOU TELL 'EM
"THAT'S JUST MY BATTLE SCAR" / I WANNA KISS YOU AND KNOCK 'EM DOWN LIKE WE
USED TO YOU / YOU'RE THE MARRYGOLD / TILL YOU'RE WALKIN' DOWN SHAKIN' THAT
ASS AGAIN AND THEN YOU WALK ON, BABY WALK ON, YOU WALK ON / YOU'RE AN ANGEL
IN THE PIT WITH HER HANDS IN THE AIR AND WE'RE MISSIN YOU"
this part says that he wants to force the fact that he wants her to come
back "DOWN TO THE DALVA BAR" or the place where they all hang out. It also
makes me have a stronger belief that he loves her. He misses her feminine
style and her craziness.
"NOW IT'S FALL AND YOUR SHOULDERS GET TIGHTER / NERVOUS FLICKS ON THE
LIGHTER / BOOTS / YOU'RE PISSED OFF POETS, YOU'RE WOMAN'S GROUPS / AND THE
FRIENDS WITH YOU WE SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THIS FOOL / WELL I GUESS WE MISSED THE
MARK / BUT STILL MY FINGERS CATCH THE SPARK AT THE THOUGHT OF THEM TOUCHING
YOU / NOW YOU'RE WOUNDED..."
I think he's saying that they should have known that the people she started
to hang out with were bad for her and would hurt her. He also says that it
makes him mad to think of them hurting her.
"... YOU NEVER COME AROUND AND YOU KNOW WE MISS YOU / BUT NOBODY TOOK YOUR
PRIDE AWAY / I SAID "THAT'S SOMETHING PEOPLE SAY"/ BACK DOWN THE BULLY TO
THE BACK OF THE BUS / CAUSE IT'S TIME FOR THEM TO BE SCARED OF US / TILL
YOU'RE YELLIN HOW WE'RE LIVING CAUSE YA GOT THE BALL / AND THEN YOU ROCK ON,
BABY ROCK ON, YOU ROCK ON..."
He stresses again that he misses her... and he now he thinks she's
overblowing it- that's it's not as big as it seems... i really don't
understand what that whole part about "BACK DOWN THE BULLY.." that just
doesn't make sense to me... yet!
"YOU'RE A SUMMERTIME HOTTIE WITH HER SOCKS IN THE AIR / YOU'RE SCREAMIN "I
DON'T CARE BABY , I DON'T CARE" / YOU SAY YOU DONT KNOW / YOU SAY YOU CAN'T
GROW / ALL I KNOW IS WE'RE MISSING YOU / (REPEAT) / SHOW UP WOUNDED /
this last verse (i think) says that he's imagining how she used to be like a
"summertime hottie" and she was guitless and free...
thanks for listening to my thoughts (i know they were extremely long)...
even if you don't agree - if you don't please write what you think
Ah, the most beautiful song ever written and my absolute fave to analyze...
I heard a live version of "Wounded" and I remember Stephan saying "This is a
song about protecting eachother." I thought that that was perfect. But on
with my analysis.
There is this girl. She has been beaten or abused or raped by her boyfriend.
And she's kinda closed-off from her friends and this guy. He could be a
close guy-friend, an ex-boyfriend, etc. She feels she can deal with it
without opening up to him and letting him in. The guy doesn't know what to
do or say, I guess. He's basically saying that he wants her to get better
soon. Like it's that easy.
The guy isn't being insensitive. I guess he just doesn't understand, doesn't
know how to deal with this whole situation. Guys doesn't really understand
us women, But he is trying to understand, even though he doesn't seem to
understand her methods of healing, such as her "pissed-off poets [and her]
women's groups". He says so himself that the only thing he knows is that
he's missing her. But he is trying so hard to understand. He knows she's
hurting, he knows she's in pain. And he can't stand that: "My fingers catch
those sparks at the thought of them touching you." He'd kill whoever did
this to her.
He is, as we see in "And the friends with you, we should've known this fool,
well I guess we missed the mark", blaming himself and their friends for what
happened to her, for not paying close attention.
This song is so comforting, so soothing. We see that this guy, even if the
only thing he knows is that he wants her to get better, he wants her to
stand up, be strong, and be who she used to be. It's empowering. Not only
rape victims can relate to this. Anybody who has ever been put down or pushd
around can realte to this one. To not be wounded, but to be a "summer time
hottie with her socks in the air"!
On a side note, it's interesting that he's talking about her abuser in the
singular mode: "the guy who put his hands on you...", and then in the
plural: "my fingers catch the sparks at the thought of them touching you..."
It seems she had an abusive boyfriend and he and his friends gang-raped her.
Which brings me to the subject of Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange".
What seems to be gang-rape, the mention of the Dalva Bar, Stephan performing
with a top hat at shows, eerily looking like Malcolm McDowell in the film...
It's making me wonder whether Stephan and Kevin wrote the song with this
film in mind.
This song is about a girl who has just gotten out of a abusive relationship
and has come back to her hometown. The song is sung by her old friend. He
sees how she is so wounded and feels so dirty and has lost all of her
confidence. The guy broke her, emotionally and phisically. But he
(stephan) remebers the girl that used to be, and is trying to get her pumped
up to become herself again, he "forces the issue," to try to make her get
rid of all the pain and move on. She is scared of everything though, even
her friends, she's afraid to talk to him, tell him all that happened. Her
old friends miss what she had been. HE loves her (I want to kiss you and
knock 'em down like we used to) he wants her back to how she was. He wants
her to feel alive again. (screaming I don't care baby I don't care)
Song: tattoo of the sun
Well the song is about this guy and his summer experience...obviously. In
the first and second verse:
I believe everything you say Cause you're not frightened the way I've been
so So I follow you Just in case you lose your way So glad you let me stay
around The chain link fence you climbed To make forbidden lakes our own
yours and mine And with the ease of the sea gulls We cut the engines and
cruise high In the summer sky
He is obviously talking to a girl, who he spent time with. And that's the
whole song basically. They go to "higher" places..."forbidden" places. They
cut the engines. They go fuck each other and do drugs.
The song goes on to say how he then felt ignored or something and he tries
to get her attention. And he's just having mood swings it seems to me. I
guess he got her pregnant and she had an abortion or something. And at the
end of the song he finds that she has lied. And that things change. And also
that people change. Maybe that's it. The song is about how people change.
It's obvious what the song is about, everyone knows that, but the hidden
meaning comes out to me and others more because we've been there. Once
someone takes your dignity and your ability to feel good about yourself,
what's left but that hollow feeling that nothing will ever be okay again?
You can't trust your friends anymore, or even yourself. I'm only 14, but I
lost something special, and I feel I can never get it back again. I've been
listening to Third Eye Blind since no one ever knew who they were, and this
song means a lot to me because it's true. If I could meet Stephan, I would
tell him how much I respect him for coming out with this song, and you can
quote me on that.
I think this song deals with a guy who really loves this girl; they're
super-close friends and he's in love with her. Then she gets raped or what
have you, and she retreats into her own dark little cell of emotional
despair ("...your shoulders get tighter, nervous flicks on the lighter,
boots, your pissed-off poets, your women's groups"). She's also scared of
trusting guys anymore ("The guy who put his hands on you has got nothing to
do with me") and so is avoiding her friends at their usual hangout ("the
Dalva Bar"). You can really feel the guy's sadness and angst and all his
feelings about the girl and what happened to her, not only through the
superb lyrics but also through the background music and Steve's voice.
I believe this song is definatley about someone being sexually abused. Its
about someone trying to have a relationship with the sexually abused person
but it is hard to get through to them because of the pain they have went
through- " and the bruises that you feel will heal and i hope you come
around ,cause we're missing you." The painful experience has changed the
person "you used to be so easy, your afriad to talk to me." and left them
scared to commmunicate with people and have a relationship. I think the
person who is having a relationship with them knows that they are hurt and
doesnt want to get intimate with them "and my fingers catch the spark at the
thought of them touching you when your wounded."
Obviously this song is about a girl who has been abused in some way and is
embarrassed to show her face in public, around her friends... the speaker
says *carrying that weight way too far* meaning the girl is letting the
shame affect her too long, and she needs to come out, be herself again, and
not be ashamed to *show up wounded*

Oh, this song is definitely about a bad experience that a (I'm assuming
girl-)friend of the narrator had. I think the lyrics pretty clearly allude
that it was rape or something like that. No question.
Name: Mike Emmet
Stephan himself said that the song is about someone thats been sexually
abused and has been scarred by the experience. So, you could use that under
i think its about someone whos been in an abusive relationship. i was once iin one, and that song reminds me of it everytime i hear it.
Definitely a song about rape, but spoken from the perspective of a friend/lover who has also been "vicitimed" due to the distance "what happens after dark" has caused.
Stephan is trying to convince this survivor that it "just (her) battle scar" and that she still holds her pride. It is easy for him though in his semi-selfishness and his thoughts of touching her - but he wants to force the issue, which he can't... she is jsut not ready to be the angle in the pit again, or that summertime hottie - at least not yet.
He is also trying to promote her growth at the same time, painting very vivid images of this girl being the fun, exciting chick shaking her ass down at the Dalva bar that she always used to be. Stephan seems to be trying to convince her that THAT is who she is, not a victim, but a survivor who has a whole life to lead... he's just hurt too.
